CPARG sponsors a family for the holidays
The Children’s Physical Activity Research Group and the Blair Research Group of the Department of Exercise Science sponsored a family for the holidays as part of the Families Helping Families (FHF) program. FHF is co-sponsored by WIS Television, the Palmetto Project, and social services agencies in the Midlands. The family supported by the CPARG and Blair groups was referred to FHF by the Richland/Lexington Disabilities and Special Needs Board. Faculty, staff, and graduate students in the two research groups purchased and wrapped toys, books, and clothing for the family’s three children, and clothing, kitchen items, household products, and gift certificates for the mother. Members of the two groups were extremely generous, and their gifts, which filled a minivan, far exceeded the basic gift items requested by FHF.
The Evolving Definition of "Sedentary" named one of the Top 10 Public Health Articles of 2008
The article The Evolving Definition of “Sedentary,” written by CPARG PI Russell Pate and graduate students Filipe Lobelo and Jennifer O’Neill has been named one of the Top 10 Public Health Articles of 2008 by Web MD’s Medscape. In the article, the authors discuss what the term “sedentary” actually implies, from the absence of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity to light activity. The authors explore past studies on sedentary behavior and the need for future studies to place as much emphasis on the lower end of the physical activity scale as the upper to gain a full understanding of each activity level and it’s affects on health.
